The team moved swiftly, smoothly into the control room. Even Rodney failed to stumble. Without really looking, John noted that Ronon and Teyla were each covering the sides of the room, leaving dead ahead for him. He moved forward, ready for anything.

Absolutely nothing greeted him.

The room was empty, devoid of even the half-sensed somethings that had shadowed them on the way there, the sensation of impending doom replaced by a deserted, dead room.

Long dead. Unlike Atlantis, a fairly heavy coating of dust lined the covered panels, and the room smelled...stale. John swept the beam of his P-90's light across the room, double checking, not willing to relax his vigilance. Not on my watch, he thought grimly. Never again on my watch.

"Room's clear," Ronon said, raising his weapon.

"I, too, find nothing of note," Teyla added. Rodney was already pulling a cover off a row of panels, eyes lit up with the intense focus that meant the rest of the room and the presences that had herded them there were forgotten. He reached out, snagging a chair that John could swear was out of his field of vision and sat down in front of the panels, leaning in and examining them. A screen flickered weakly with the symbols and forms of the Ancients' language. John glanced from the screen to Rodney, watching him watch the play of light and language.

"Hello..." Rodney said softly, and John smiled, recognizing the note of discovery. Rodney leaned in, tapping a few commands and changing the display. John could swear it shone brighter. He grinned at Teyla, who grinned back, and Ronon, whose expression never changed. Relaxing a bit, he turned back to Rodney, who was now frowning.

"Rodney?" he drawled, knowing that none of his team was fooled by the casual tone.

"One minute..." Rodney said, staring. His mouth dropped open. "Oh no."

"What?" John re-gripped his P-90, bringing it up to a standby position.

"Power drain. Again." Rodney turned to them, frowning. "Something that was activated by our arrival is pulling the remaining power to the systems. If I can't figure out a way to stop it, we might not be able to get out the same way we got in." Turning back, he started tapping furiously. John squinted at the screen, but the words scrolled by too fast for him to translate more than a word or two.

"Wait a minute," John said. "Was that..."

"Wraith. The Ancients were working on a defense against the Wraith. Our coming in triggered it. That's the energy drain. The system is trying to bring the defenses online."

Rodney turned to them with a mix of excitement and fear on his face. "We woke up the Sentries."

Thanks! :)

Oooo! But apparently the sentries understand they're not wraith if they herded them *toward* the control room...

That's up to the next writer to decide. Have you joined yet? :)
24th-Jan-2006 04:20 pm (UTC)
Not yet, no. Well, I've joined the comm, but not signed up to write because 1) my muse is fickle and 2) Real Life sometimes renders me busy, so a 2-day writing window is a tad narrow for me.
24th-Jan-2006 11:31 pm (UTC)
Ah. Sometimes I need the fire under me to write.
25th-Jan-2006 12:34 am (UTC)
Oh, I create my own fire with cliffhangers and such. I never need an excuse to write, it just may not be what it *should* be.

So I tried to make everything work together. That was the only explanation I could come up with for an Ancient structure with a) defenses against the Wraith, b) Wraith code in the system, and c) attacks against people with ancient genes. *scratches head*
26th-Jan-2006 03:18 pm (UTC)
Oh - I didn't mean it had Wraith code in it, I meant it was the Ancients' word for Wraith. Sorry for the confusion. But it'll be interesting to see what you made of it from the third installment. *goes off to read*
